Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Olufemi Bamiro has emphasized the need for quality interaction between Nigerian Universities and the private sector saying that the relationship should be geared towards generating innovations for accelerating the Nigerian economic development
Prof. Bamiro in an interview with The Chronicle of Education underscored the importance of industry-universities collaboration as an important organizational form for knowledge creation.
“When both parties relate and are kept abreast of current trends, they can proffer solutions, he said.
Citing an example of a study on graduate employability/Curriculum delivery conducted in Scotland, Prof. Bamiro said that curriculum delivery involves teamwork, pointing out that lecturers should not solely be responsible for curriculum delivery as it requires cooperation from every member of staff of institutions and even those in the private sector.
Bamiro who is currently the Chairman of, the NUC Skills Development Advisory Committee stated that the Nigerian higher institution curriculum should be an outcome-based curriculum which should have measurable objectives and clear indicators that showcases the maximum impact of learning.
The Scholar equally charged University lecturers to be willing to learn and adapt to new ideas so as not to become obsolete. In his words, he said, “It is one thing to design a quality curriculum that is at par, it is another issue to have lecturers that can deliver it.”
It would be recalled that earlier in January 2020, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed had said the agency was in the final stage of “a draft review” of Nigeria’s university curriculum.
Speaking on, Prof Bamiro harped on the need for the training of Nigerian lecturers. “ Training should be the focus of every serious-minded lecturer, he said.
He added that the Nigerian government must be ready to demand quality performance from its learning institutions. “Government must require performance indices that will make Nigerian institutions to be more committed to their mandate.”
